Shoebury East Beach

The beach at Shoebury curves away eastward in that particular way Essex coastline does - wide, sandy, and surprisingly quiet even when everywhere else is rammed. You get proper views across the Thames estuary from here, and on a clear day you can pick out the industrial landscape on the Kent side. It's the sort of place where the sea feels genuinely big rather than just a postcard version of itself.

Walkers absolutely love this stretch. The beach is broad enough that even at high tide there's room to move, and the walking is easy - none of that claggy shingle that does your knees in. Families with young kids get a good few hours out of it before boredom sets in, though there's not much in the way of the usual seaside entertainment. What you're after here is space, air, and the kind of quiet that lets you actually think.

Timing matters. Come late afternoon and you'll have it almost to yourself. The light's better then too, turning the sand properly golden. Getting there from Rochford takes twenty minutes or so by car - dead straightforward, which is exactly what you want when you're staying nearby.

If you're based at Riverside Village Holiday Park a few miles inland, this works perfectly as a day out. It's the antidote to the usual seaside crush - proper Essex coast rather than postcard stuff, and all the better for it.
