Shire Combe Buttress and West Slab

Climbing enthusiasts and serious walkers will find their fix at this dramatic rock formation on the Gower Peninsula. The buttress and slab offer proper scrambling routes with spectacular coastal views across Three Cliffs Bay and beyond. It's not for everyone - you'll need a decent head for heights and proper walking boots at minimum.

Getting there requires a good hike across moorland from the nearest car parks, so allow at least half a day for the round trip. The rock quality is excellent limestone, and the routes range from moderate scrambles to more technical climbs for those with ropes and experience. Families with young children should probably give this one a miss.

What makes the effort worthwhile is the commanding position overlooking some of Wales' most stunning coastline. On a clear day, you can see right across to Devon. The area forms part of the Gower's wild interior, well away from the tourist crowds that flock to the beaches below.

If you're staying at Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Nicholaston Farm, this makes for an excellent contrast to beach days. Just remember this is serious terrain - weather can change quickly, and mobile signal is patchy at best. Experienced outdoor types will love it; casual sightseers might find the walk a bit much for the payoff.
