Cathole Cave

Deep shadows and ancient whispers greet you at this limestone cave perched above Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula. Cathole Cave holds the distinction of being one of the oldest occupied sites in Wales, with evidence of human habitation stretching back over 30,000 years. The name might raise a smirk, but it's deadly serious archaeology - Stone Age hunters sheltered here when woolly mammoths still roamed the land below.

Getting there requires a proper walk along the coastal path from Pennard, which puts off the casual visitor but rewards those who make the effort. The cave entrance itself is relatively modest, and while you can peer inside, there's not masses to see beyond the rocky chamber where our ancestors once lived. What makes it special is the setting and the story.

History buffs will find it fascinating, especially knowing that Neanderthal tools were discovered here alongside later human remains. Families with older children who don't mind a decent hike will enjoy combining it with Three Cliffs Bay below - one of Wales' most photographed beaches. The coastal walk takes about 45 minutes each way from Pennard village.
