Shilstone Rocks Riding Stables

Down a proper country lane near South Brent, Shilstone Rocks is where you go if you want to actually ride horses rather than just look at them from a café. It's a working riding stables - not a museum, not a petting farm - so expect serious business alongside beginners' lessons.

You'll be matched with a horse based on your experience, then off you go into the moorland. The rides take you through decent countryside with views across Dartmoor itself, which sits just a few miles north. Even if you're nervous, the staff know what they're doing. They're not rushing you through to the next group.

This works best for anyone with even basic riding experience - complete novices might find the trotting a bit much on their first go. Kids get a kick out of it if they're old enough to sit properly and follow instructions. Plan for a couple of hours minimum, including the briefing and tacking up.

Timing matters. Early morning is quieter and the horses are fresher. Wet weather doesn't stop them running, but muddy moorland rides are properly hard work - bring decent boots.

If you're doing a Dartmoor holiday, this fills a solid morning or afternoon and breaks up the walking. It's close enough to the park itself that you can combine it with Postbridge or one of the prettier villages.
