Shiel Hill

The walk up Shiel Hill rewards you with proper views across Perthshire - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant on a clear day. It's an accessible peak rather than a proper mountain, which makes it ideal if you're after some elevation without needing crampons or a head for heights.

You get a working landscape spread out below: farmland, woodland, the ribbon of the Tay somewhere in the distance. The summit itself is unremarkable - a cairn, some trig point history, room to sit and eat a sandwich. Takes most people between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit dull if they're expecting drama. History types won't find much up there, but the walk itself takes you through decent Scottish countryside that tells its own story.

Both put you within striking distance of this and other Perthshire walks.
