Shewalton Walk

The walk at Shewalton winds through proper wetland habitat, the kind of place where you'll actually spot something - herons, terns, the occasional osprey if you're lucky. It's a nature reserve that takes itself seriously without being stuffy about it. You get boardwalks over boggy bits and open water where the light reflects off the surface in that way that makes you understand why people bang on about Scottish landscapes.

This is fundamentally a birdwatcher's outing, though families with patient kids will find it absorbing enough for an hour or so. The reserve itself is free, which is brilliant, and the main paths are manageable even if it's been wet. Bring binoculars if you've got them - you'll see far more than the naked eye alone. Early morning is when things actually move about, so factor that into your day.
