Shepherd's Lake

The water here sits still and dark, ringed by reeds and the sort of Norfolk sky that goes on forever. Shepherd's Lake is a proper freshwater lake just east of King's Lynn, and it's the kind of place that rewards a quiet morning walk rather than a crowded afternoon visit.

You won't find much in the way of facilities or fuss. There's no café, no visitor centre, no admission charge as far as anyone can tell. What you get instead is space - the sort of uncluttered Norfolk landscape where you can actually hear yourself think. The walking is straightforward enough, mostly flat paths around the water's edge. It's good for birdwatchers, particularly in spring and autumn when migrating species pass through. Anglers come for pike and perch.

Families with young children might find an hour here enough before restlessness sets in. The lake itself isn't dramatic or particularly large. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Searles Leisure Resort or Manor Park are both within a few miles - it makes a decent morning escape. The North Norfolk Coast Glamping site is a bit further out if you're after something more upmarket.

Go early or late in the day. Avoid weekends if you want it to yourself. It's not a destination on its own, but as part of a Norfolk break it fits nicely alongside bigger attractions. The landscape does something quiet to your head. Sometimes that's exactly what a holiday needs.
