RSPB Snettisham

The vast expanse of ponds and marshland at Snettisham pulls in serious birdwatchers from across the region, and honestly, it's not hard to see why. This RSPB reserve, just east of King's Lynn, transforms depending on the season - in winter you'll spot thousands of waders and wildfowl gathering on the lagoons, while spring and summer bring breeding birds and migrant species that keep your binoculars firmly glued to your face.

There are proper walking trails threading through the site, with viewing areas positioned to catch sight of avocets, oystercatchers, and if you're lucky, the rarer visitors that drift through. It's genuinely absorbing stuff, though you'll need patience and decent optics to get the most from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit static - there's no flashy visitor centre or play areas, just you, the birds, and whatever the Norfolk weather throws at you.

Go in early morning when the light's best and the birds are most active. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're taking it seriously. Admission is typically free for RSPB members, though non-members usually pay a small contribution. It's perfect if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Parkdean at Heacham Beach or Searles Leisure Resort - both are within four or five miles and give you easy access to the coast as well.
