Shepherd Wheel

The Shepherd Wheel sits tucked into a valley on Sheffield's western edge, a working water-powered grinding mill that's been operating since the 1780s. It's small - you can see the whole thing in twenty minutes - but it's the real deal. A narrow stream turns the wheel, and inside you'll find the original grinding stone and all the industrial kit that once shaped Sheffield's cutlery trade.

Walking in, the sound of water on stone and the smell of damp metal take you straight back. The wheel itself is hypnotic to watch, especially after rain when the stream runs properly. There's a forge room where you can see how the grinders worked, bent over their stones for hours each day. It's not grim exactly, but it's certainly cramped - gives you respect for anyone who did this for a living.

Historically minded types will find it worthwhile; families with young children might spend an hour here max, though the water wheel usually holds their attention. Admission appears to be free, though the place relies on donations. Sheffield's Peak District surrounds you, so combine this with the campsite circuit - Fox Hagg Farm and Wyming Brook are both within a couple of miles, giving you proper walking country on your doorstep.

Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends mean school groups, and you'll be jostling for space. The floor's uneven in places, so not ideal if you're wobbly on your feet.
