Shenfield Common

The common spreads across 64 acres of proper Essex countryside, just east of Billericay - mostly woodland and grassland that feels genuinely removed from the commuter belt despite being within reach of London. You get a network of walking paths threading through it, with the occasional clearing where you can actually see what you're doing rather than just pushing through undergrowth.

It's the kind of place walkers come to log a few miles without fuss. Nothing flashy - no visitor centre, no café, no coded gates - just open access to decent paths. Families with restless kids will find enough space to run about, though it won't occupy them all day. Birdwatchers might spot something worthwhile depending on the season, particularly in the wooded sections.

The real appeal here is that it's uncomplicated. Free to visit, unrestricted access, and close enough to Barleylands Campsite - six miles away - to be worth incorporating into a longer stay in the area. If you're camping there and want a morning walk that doesn't require driving, this is it. Come midweek if you can; weekends pull in rather a lot of local foot traffic.

Don't expect drama. It's a working reserve, not a showpiece. The paths are fine, the air's fresher than Billericay town, and that's the whole point.
