You'll find Sheetrim Lough just outside Newry, a modest lake that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet morning visit. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no gift shops, just water reflecting whatever sky you've got on the day.

The lough itself is small enough to walk around in under an hour, with decent paths hugging the shoreline and a few spots to pull up and sit for a bit. Birdwatchers come here regularly, and you'll understand why once you're there - the water draws geese, ducks, and if you're patient, you might spot something rarer. Families with younger kids won't get hours of entertainment, but it's a solid 45-minute detour if you're already in the Newry area exploring the larger landscape of Mourne and Down.

The real appeal is as a breathing space between activities rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at something like Hilltop Hideaway nearby - those pods with hot tubs are properly luxurious - you could walk over early morning before the light gets harsh. Free to visit, naturally, and there's nothing to book or plan.

It's best visited in autumn when the light sits low and golden, or in spring when the birds are nesting and you've got a real sense of purpose to your watching.
