Sheerhatch Wood

Dense woodland on the eastern edges of Cambridgeshire, Sheerhatch Wood offers a proper escape from the flatlands that dominate this corner of England. The trees here - a mix of oak, ash, and conifers - create genuine shade and something resembling topography in a region not known for either. Walking trails wind through the canopy without much fanfare or signposting, which is either refreshing or maddening depending on how you feel about getting slightly lost.

The wood is small enough that you'll exhaust the main paths in under two hours, though if you're the type who stops to look at moss and listen for woodpeckers, you could happily stretch it to half a day. The nearest proper settlement is Henlow, just a few miles west - useful for provisions or a coffee afterwards.

The park itself is well-regarded, so combining a day of leisure there with a woodland wander works well for a quieter Cambridgeshire break. There's no visitor centre or facilities at Sheerhatch itself, so arrive prepared. Parking is a bit rudimentary - a small lay-by that can fill quickly on weekends.
