Sheep Beach

The name alone makes you smile - Sheep Beach, just outside Harwich in Suffolk, is one of those wonderfully literal British seaside spots that delivers exactly what the tin says. You won't find sheep wandering the shingle anymore, but the pebbled shore stretches out with proper character, backing onto the kind of working coast that doesn't get prettified for tourism.

It's a quiet stretch, which means families with small children get actual breathing room, and walkers can make decent progress without dodging ice cream queues. The beach itself is mostly shingle and sand, good for a paddle if you're brave about the North Sea temperature. Low tide exposes mudflats further out - interesting to poke around if you're into that sort of thing, less so if you just want a traditional seaside session.

This works best as part of a longer coast ramble between Harwich and Felixstowe rather than a destination in itself. An hour's walk here, grab a fish supper in town, move on. It's genuinely free - no hidden charges, no council parking nonsense - and you can rock up whenever suits.

Stay at Suffolk Sands or Felixstowe Beach Holiday Park nearby and you've got easy access. Don't expect facilities beyond what Harwich town centre offers. The appeal is the lack of fuss, really. Not Instagram-worthy, but honest.
