Sharp Tor (Dartmeet/East Dartmoor)

Sharp Tor rises abruptly from the moorland around Dartmeet, a granite outcrop that demands you get out of the car and climb. The walk from South Brent takes the better part of an hour across open heath, but it's straightforward enough - no scrambling required, just steady legs and decent footwear.

Once you're up there, the views across East Dartmoor are genuinely proper. South Brent sits below to the north, and on a clear day you can see far enough to make the effort feel justified. The tor itself is a popular spot with walkers and photographers, which means you'll rarely have it to yourself, but there's something reassuring about that too.

Historically, tors like this one marked boundaries and served as navigation points for people crossing the moor. These days it's mostly folk after a decent walk and a better vantage point. Families with older kids will find it manageable; younger children might struggle with the distance. Allow two to three hours from South Brent and back.

If you're staying in Dartmoor National Park - and really, why wouldn't you be - Sharp Tor fits well into a broader moorland day. It's not a sit-down attraction or a café stop. It's a destination for people who actually want to use their legs and experience the landscape properly. Free to visit, obviously. Go early on weekends if you value space and solitude.
