Sharlston Dam

The water here is surprisingly still. Sharlston Dam sits just outside Wakefield like a proper working piece of Yorkshire infrastructure that's quietly pleasant to walk around. It's the sort of spot locals use regularly because it's convenient and uncrowded, not because it's spectacular.

Free to access, accessible year-round. Allow 45 minutes for a gentle circuit if you're not rushing. Best on a weekday morning when Wakefield's commuters have cleared off. Perfect for walkers after something low-key rather than dramatic. History buffs might find the dam engineering interesting, but you're not here for Victorian industrial romance - you're here for a straightforward countryside walk that actually delivers.
