About Shapley Tor
From the top you're looking out over moorland that stretches for miles, with Exeter visible on clearer days. The tor itself is rocky and exposed, which means the wind can be brutal but also means views aren't blocked by trees. On a decent day it's exceptional. On a grey day, frankly, you're just wet.
Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from the car park, depending on fitness. There's no visitor facility up there - bring water and something to eat because you'll want to linger. The ascent is steep enough that it's not ideal for very young children, but teenagers and anyone with reasonable walking boots will manage fine.
It slots perfectly into a Dartmoor break. Pair it with Dartmoor National Park itself - which surrounds the tor - and you've got a full day sorted. Woodland Springs is nearby too if you're looking for a base with facilities. The real pull here is effort rewarded: it's not a viewing platform or a car park vista, it's a climb you've earned.
