Shankbank Wood

You'll find proper woodland walking here - the kind where the path gets a bit boggy underfoot and you can actually hear yourself think. Shankbank Wood sits just outside Carlisle, and it's the sort of place locals know about but visitors tend to miss entirely. The forest floor is thick with moss, the trees overhead are tall enough to block out most of the sky, and if you time it right in autumn the light through the leaves is genuinely lovely.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than anything grandiose - no visitor centre, no cafe, just trees and trails. You're looking at an hour or so if you take one of the main loops, longer if you fancy poking about and finding the quieter bits. Dog walkers absolutely love it, and families with kids who don't need everything explained will get on well here too. The ground can be wet even when it hasn't rained recently, so boots matter.

There's no charge, which is refreshing. If you're staying at Low Moor Head or Camelot, both within easy striking distance, this makes for a solid morning out before heading back for lunch. It won't blow your mind - but that's partly the point. Shankbank Wood is comfortable, undemanding woodland rather than a destination you've travelled three hours to tick off. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
