Castra Exploratorum

The Roman fort at Castra Exploratorum sits just outside Carlisle, a crumbling reminder that the empire's northern frontier ran through Cumbria. What you're looking at are the earthworks of a proper military installation from around AD 80 - ditches, ramparts, the lot - though the stones themselves vanished centuries ago, plundered for local building projects. The site's modest on first impression. You won't find reconstructed barracks or costumed soldiers here. Instead, you get the raw archaeology: a rectangular fort layout still visible in the landscape if you know what you're looking at, best appreciated from slightly elevated ground. History buffs will spend a good hour mapping the defences and picturing supply lines running north to Hadrian's Wall. Children under ten? They'll manage twenty minutes before asking why there's nothing to actually touch. The walk is gentle and free, which matters when you're juggling a caravan holiday with three kids and a tight budget. Spring or early autumn work best - winter brings mud, summer brings midges. If you're staying at Low Moor Head or High Gaitle, both within a couple of miles, this makes a sensible morning outing before heading into Carlisle proper. The real payoff comes when you realise you're standing where soldiers once stood watching for trouble from the north - the quietness of it somehow hits harder than any museum display. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and interested in Roman Britain. Skip it otherwise.
