Shafto's Pond

A modest body of water just outside Durham that punches well above its weight for a quick stop. Shafto's Pond is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, which is precisely why it works. The water sits calm and reflective, ringed by trees that give decent shelter even when the Pennine wind gets up.

It's a walker's spot more than anything else. The circuit takes maybe forty minutes at a gentle pace, and there's enough green space around it to let children burn off steam without anyone having to work too hard. Dog owners love it. The path is flat and straightforward, so it's not the kind of hike that requires proper boots or navigation skills.

Historically it's tied to the Shafto family who owned land hereabouts - hence the name - but you won't find plaques or visitor facilities. It's just a pond doing what ponds do, which some will find refreshingly low-key and others might think a bit thin for a dedicated trip. Free to visit, naturally, with no entrance fees or time restrictions.

Stay at The Gables Pod Camping or Eden Grange Glamping nearby and you've got a decent morning walk on the calendar between breakfast and heading into Durham itself. In winter it's prettier than summer - the bare trees show the water off better. Spring works too, when the undergrowth hasn't completely closed in. Worth an hour of your time if you're in the area. Not worth a special journey on its own.
