Sgurr Choinnich Beag

The climb up Sgurr Choinnich Beag is properly steep, but the effort pays off with views across the Mamores that'll make your legs forget about the burn. You're looking at a decent hill walk from Kinlochleven - the peak sits at around 1,100 metres and demands respect, especially in poor weather when the ridge narrows considerably.

It takes most walkers three to four hours round trip, depending on fitness. The route itself is straightforward enough if you've got any hillwalking experience, though the scramble to the summit requires a head for heights. There's no visitor centre or facilities - bring water, proper boots, and check the forecast before you set out.

This one's for walkers with some experience, not a casual stroll. Families with older kids who've done a few peaks might manage it, but younger children will struggle with the exposure and technical bits. The real pull is the ridge walk itself - you're high enough to feel properly wild, but not so remote that you'll be alone.

If you're staying at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park, you're ideally placed - it's only six miles away and has excellent facilities for base camping. Blackwater Hostel is slightly closer and cheaper if you're not bringing a caravan. Either way, spend your mornings on Sgurr Choinnich Beag and your afternoons exploring the lower walks in the area. Weather in the Highlands is unpredictable, so pick your day carefully.
