Sgùrr na Coinnich

The walk up Sgùrr na Coinnich takes you straight into proper Highland scenery. It's a relatively modest peak at 968 metres, but the views across the Sound of Raasay and towards the Applecross hills make it feel far more significant than the height suggests.

From Kyle of Lochalsh, you're looking at a solid two to three hours round trip depending on fitness and the paths you take. The terrain is rough in places - loose scree near the summit, wet ground lower down - so decent boots matter. On clear days the view stretches to Skye and beyond; on misty ones you'll be above the cloud layer, which is equally atmospheric if you don't mind losing the vista.

This is one for serious walkers rather than casual strollers. Kids might manage it if they're used to hills, but younger ones would struggle with the unrelenting gradient. There's no admission fee and no facilities at the trailhead, so bring water and snacks.

If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping just up the road on Skye, this works nicely as a half-day excursion. The drive from Kyle takes minutes. It's the sort of walk that's quieter than Ben Loyal or the better-known Skye peaks, which means fewer folk and more breathing space. Worth the effort if Highland hills are your thing.
