Sgùrr Mòr

The walk up Sgùrr Mòr kicks off from near Kyle of Lochalsh and climbs steadily through terrain that shifts from moorland scrub to proper mountain. It's a proper Highlands experience - the kind of peak that rewards you without requiring technical climbing gear or years of mountaineering experience.

The summit sits at 812 metres, which sounds reasonable until you're actually climbing it. The views pay out though. On a clear day you're looking across to Skye, down towards Plockton, and back over the Sound of Raasay. Midges can be an issue in summer, so go armed with repellent or wait for September when they thin out.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on fitness. It's not a casual stroll - there's proper elevation gain and the path gets boggy in places - but it's not a technical scramble either. Families with teenagers who enjoy a challenge will get something from it. Solo walkers tend to love these Highland peaks because you rarely feel crowded up here.

If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping on Skye, you could knock this out on a day trip, though you'll need to factor in the drive from the campsite. The climb works brilliantly as part of a longer Highland holiday rather than a standalone attraction - pair it with exploring Kyle itself or making time for nearby forest trails.
