Sgùrr Eilde Mòr

The walk up Sgùrr Eilde Mòr from Kinlochleven is properly steep, and it'll take you a good four to five hours round trip depending on your fitness. What you get for that effort is a 901-metre peak with views across the Grey Corries that justify every huffing step.

It's a fell that suits confident hillwalkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain is rough in places - loose scree toward the top, boggy sections lower down - so proper boots matter. You'll start from the village itself, climbing steadily through moorland before the gradient really bites. The summit doesn't have the dramatic exposure of some neighbouring peaks, but the panorama across the Central Highlands is substantial.

If you're staying at Blackwater Hostel, Glamping & Campsite just outside Kinlochleven, this makes a solid day's exertion. Three and a half miles away means you're close enough for a pre-dawn start if conditions look promising. Go in autumn when the weather's more stable than summer, though wind can still be ferocious at the top.

The village itself is useful for supplies and food before or after - nowhere flash, but Kinlochleven has what you need. This is a walk for people who enjoy the graft more than the destination; there's nothing fancy up there, just rock, sky, and a real sense of having climbed something. Budget a full day and don't approach it lightly.
