Sgor na h-Iolaire

The walk up Sgor na h-Iolaire from Ballater is steep, relentless, and genuinely worth doing - though maybe not on a day when the midge forecast is dire. This isn't a gentle hillside stroll; it's a proper mountain hike that demands decent boots and some grit, rewarding you with views across the Cairngorms that justify every burning leg muscle.

The peak itself sits at 650 metres, which sounds modest until you factor in the gradient. Most walkers tackle it as a half-day outing from the village, heading out early to beat the crowds and the weather. On a clear day - and this matters enormously in the Highlands - you're scanning across a genuinely impressive sweep of moorland and distant peaks. Misty days render it rather pointless, if I'm honest.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at either Ballater Caravan Park or Howe of Torbeg and want something more demanding than a casual park wander. Families with teenagers keen on hillwalking will manage it fine. Younger kids will likely find the push up dull and the summit underwhelming. For serious walkers it's part of the broader Cairngorms tapestry rather than a destination in itself - a good acclimatisation hike before tackling the bigger peaks nearby.

There's no charge, no facilities at the summit, and no particular best time beyond avoiding the midges if you can. Allow three to four hours round trip. It's free climbing, wild ground - proper Scottish hillwalking without the fanfare.
