Sgeir Bhuidhe

The forest at Sgeir Bhuidhe sits just inland from Kyle of Lochalsh, a proper slice of Highland woodland that doesn't get mobbed the way some of the more famous glens do. You're walking through dense native forest - a mix of birch, rowan and pine that feels genuinely wild without requiring a full expedition. The trees open up occasionally to reveal glimpses toward the water, and on a clear day the views out to Skye make the walk worthwhile.

It's excellent for families who want something less strenuous than a proper mountain hike but still want to feel like they've done a bit of exploring. Kids tend to enjoy the forest floor itself - rocks to clamber over, burns to peer into, the whole working woodland experience. Walkers appreciate it as a gentle warm-up before tackling bigger peaks in the area, and it's the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong rather than just see other people.

Allow a couple of hours to properly potter about without rushing. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Free to access, naturally.

If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping just four miles away on Skye, this makes a proper easy-going afternoon outing. It's close enough to pop out between other activities but far enough away from the main tourist trails that you'll feel like you've discovered something real rather than just ticked off an attraction.
