Seven Caves

The caves themselves are modest - you're not talking Skaftafell or anything dramatic. But there's something satisfying about poking about in the cliffs near Larne and finding these seven little cavities worn into the stone over millennia. The main draw is the walk itself rather than any showstopping interior. You're scrambling about on a coastal path with decent views across the water, and the caves break up the ramble nicely.

Historically they've been occupied on and off - there's enough folklore attached to warrant a detour if you're in the area, though I won't pretend you'll lose hours exploring each one. Most folk manage the lot in under two hours including the walk and mucking about inside. The caves are free to visit and there's no formal visitor centre, so it's proper low-key.

Perfect for walkers who want something a bit different from the standard cliff paths, though families with young children might find the uneven terrain a touch awkward. It works brilliantly as part of a wider coastal wander - you're close enough to Larne to combine it with other local spots. Down to Earth Wild Camping is just four and a half miles away, so if you're staying in a tent nearby, this is the sort of morning activity that doesn't require advance booking or planning. Go at low tide if you can manage it - the approach is easier and you get the full sense of the caves rather than peering in from above.
