Seven Bridges Valley

The River Ure cuts through a landscape of wooded slopes and open moorland between Ripon and Masham, creating what locals call Seven Bridges Valley - though honestly, the bridges matter less than the walk itself. The reserve spans a proper stretch of countryside where you can follow the river on foot, spot kingfishers if you're lucky, and actually hear yourself think. It's the kind of place where North Yorkshire shows off without trying too hard.

This is walker territory first and foremost. The valley paths are well-trodden but not crowded, and you get genuine solitude if you go midweek or out of season. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might struggle with the distance and muddy stretches depending on the season. Birdwatchers genuinely rate it, especially spring and autumn migrations. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to see the river properly rather than just dash through.

Nearest town is Ripon, a pleasant enough base for exploring the Harrogate area. If you're staying at Riverside Meadows or Woodhouse Farm - both excellent caravan parks within three miles - you could easily slot this into a park-centred break. Sleningford Watermill, a bit further out, makes a decent companion visit if you've got time.

Admission is free, and there's no formal opening hours business - it's a nature reserve, not a theme park. Weather matters here though. Go during dry spells when the paths aren't swimming in mud. Winter can be bleak and soggy; summer proper lovely.
