Settlements

Bronze Age circles and stone rows dot the moorland above South Brent, and walking out to these ancient settlements feels less like visiting a museum and more like stumbling onto something genuinely old. The remains aren't flashy - we're talking low stone circles, burial cairns, and alignments that Bronze Age peoples arranged across the high ground perhaps 4,000 years ago. What gets you is the sheer number of them. You'll find several clusters within reasonable walking distance of each other, each one positioned where it catches the light in that particular Dartmoor way.

This is proper walking country, and the sites reward those prepared for bog and moorland terrain. Bring decent boots and a map - there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, just the archaeology itself. Half a day easily covers the main settlements if you're reasonably fit, though you could spend far longer if you stop to sit with the scale of it all. Families with younger kids might find the walk tedious given the payoff is subtle rather than dramatic, but teenagers and serious walkers will find it compelling. It's free and always open, naturally.

Based near South Brent, you're well positioned for the broader archaeology circuit, and both Dartmoor Domes and Ashbourne Woods sit within spitting distance. The settlements work brilliantly as part of a longer moorland day rather than a destination in their own right - combine them with a walk to Burrator Reservoir or a visit to one of the proper tor circuits. That's when they land properly.
