Settlement Pond

A shallow water body just outside Peterlee that's become something of a local favourite for a quiet afternoon out. Settlement Pond sits on the edge of this former mining town, a proper contrast to the industrial heritage you'll find nearby. The water attracts birdwatchers year-round - you'll spot mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, some rarer visitors during migration season.

It's not a dramatic landscape. No dramatic cliffs or mountain views here. What you get instead is a gentle spot for a walk, somewhere to sit on the bank with a flask and actually think. The surrounding grassland makes it easy to circumnavigate if you fancy it, and it's accessible enough for families with younger kids or anyone not after a serious hike.

Truth is, you won't need more than an hour here unless you're genuinely into your birds. It works best as a break during a broader Durham exploration - pair it with a walk around the coast at nearby Crimdon or head towards Hartlepool if you want proper seaside. The Barn at Easington is just a couple of miles away and worth staying at if you're making Settlement Pond part of a longer stay.

Free to visit, naturally. Best in early morning when the water's still and the light's good for photography. Bring binoculars if you're interested in what's actually living in there.
