Serpentine Lake

The Serpentine Lake sits just outside Henlow, a proper working landscape lake that's been part of the local area for centuries. It's not one of those manicured tourist attractions - this is a genuine fishing and wildlife spot where you'll see anglers with their rods set up and mallards bobbing about in the shallows. The walking path round it takes maybe forty minutes at a leisurely pace, and it's genuinely pleasant without being spectacular. The water reflects the sky nicely on a clear day, which sounds obvious but does matter when you're out here.

Families with young kids will find it decent for an hour or so - there's space to run about, you might spot herons if you're lucky, and the flat terrain means no exhausting climbs. Birdwatchers will want to bring binoculars. The lake works well as a morning walk if you're staying at Henlow Bridge Lakes nearby - it's close enough for a pre-breakfast stroll without needing to drive anywhere. Walking boots aren't essential but the ground can get muddy after rain, so think about that.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll want to check locally about parking. It's not the kind of place you'd trek miles to see on its own, but if you're in Hertfordshire for a park holiday, an hour here is time well spent. Real, functional, proper English countryside rather than postcard-pretty, and that's rather the point.
