Serpentine Lake

The Serpentine is a proper slice of calm on Peterborough's doorstep, a long finger of water that winds through flat Cambridgeshire countryside like something from a dream. You'll find locals here at all hours - walkers doing the circuit, anglers planted on the banks, families tossing bread at the ducks. The lake itself is beautiful in that understated way English water often is: reed beds along the edges, open water in the middle, nothing dramatic but deeply restful.

Walkers get the most from this one. The path that runs alongside is flat and manageable, takes about an hour to do the whole loop without rushing, and you'll spot swans, grebes, and the occasional heron if you're lucky. Families with young kids will manage it easily enough, though there's not much to actually do once you've walked it - no playground, no cafe that I could find. That's not a criticism, mind you. Sometimes a walk and a view is exactly what's needed.

It's worth timing your visit for late afternoon when the light hits the water properly and the crowds thin out. The two caravan parks nearby - Ferry Meadows is the stronger option, honestly - mean you can base yourself locally and make this part of a wider exploring day. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. Leave the pushchair at home unless you're confident with uneven ground.
