Serpent Wood

The paths through Serpent Wood wind like their namesake between tall Scots pine and birch, offering proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find in more famous Fife forests. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - quiet enough that you notice the occasional bird call, messy enough underfoot that kids will find plenty of sticks to carry about.

This is a straightforward forest walk rather than a destination with facilities or attractions attached. Bring decent boots if it's been wet, and allow anything from 45 minutes to two hours depending on which paths you tackle. The main appeal is simply being among proper trees without having to drive to the Lake District to find them. Walkers will appreciate the gentle terrain, and it's accessible enough for families with young legs, though there's little to stop a toddler getting bored after an hour.

The wood sits within easy reach of Clackmannan, making it a natural addition to a longer Fife break rather than a trip in itself. If you're staying at Fossoway Cabins or Meadow View Glamping nearby, you could knock this out on a rainy morning before heading somewhere with more bells and whistles. It's the sort of walk that works best as part of a wider itinerary - perfectly pleasant on its own, but not worth planning a weekend around.
