Touch the plants. That's the whole point here. The Sensory Garden near Dronfield is designed so you actually engage with what's growing rather than just walking past with your hands in your pockets. There are textures everywhere - soft lamb's ears, spiky sea holly, silky grasses - and the layout encourages you to brush against things, crush herbs to release their scent, and generally get your fingers dirty.

It works best for families with younger children who haven't yet learned to keep their distance from every growing thing. Parents get a breather knowing their kids can legitimately touch everything. Older visitors and gardeners interested in plant varieties will find it pleasant enough, though it's more about the experience than horticultural depth.

There's no entry fee, which is decent. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling and actually stopping to smell things rather than rushing through. The space isn't huge - you won't need all day. Best visited when plants are established and aromatic, so late spring through early autumn beats a winter visit when everything's dormant.

Riverside Valley Camping is closer at 4.6 miles. Neither location is far enough that you're committing your whole day to gardens, which is probably right - it's a supplement to a park break rather than the main event.
