Selworthy Beacon

The walk up Selworthy Beacon rewards you with one of the finest views across Exmoor and out towards the Bristol Channel. It's a proper trek from the village of Selworthy itself - steep in places, but the path is well-maintained and the climb takes about 45 minutes if you're moving at a reasonable pace.

Once you're up there, the vista opens right out. On a clear day you can see right across to Wales. The beacon itself is small, almost modest when you finally reach it, but that's rather the point - it's the landscape that matters here, not some grand monument.

Families with older kids will manage this without too much complaint. Younger ones might struggle with the gradient, and there's no real flat section for a breather halfway up. Allow two to three hours for the whole outing if you're taking your time and want to sit about at the top. Walkers will love it; historians will appreciate the Bronze Age barrow up there, though there's not much to see beyond the topography.

It's free, naturally, and there are no facilities at the summit - bring water. The best approach is from Selworthy village car park. If you're based at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins Minehead, this makes a cracking morning or afternoon excursion. Combine it with a walk around Selworthy itself, which is genuinely worth pottering around, and you've got a proper day sorted.
