Selworthy All Saints Church

The church sits at the top of a steep village green in Selworthy, about three miles inland from Minehead, and it's one of those places that stops you mid-walk. All Saints is a proper 15th-century wool church - built when the local merchants had proper money - and the cream-coloured stone practically glows against the Exmoor backdrop. Inside, the roof timbers are something else: intricate carved work that's survived five centuries of Somerset weather.

The real draw here is the setting rather than rushing through in fifteen minutes. The village green slopes down dramatically, and from the church steps you get views across the vale that justify the walk. Families with older kids will appreciate it; younger ones might get restless in the pews, though the churchyard is spacious enough for a proper explore. History buffs will spend a good hour picking apart the interior details - memorial brasses, the font, the screen work.

It's free to wander in during daylight, though opening hours aren't guaranteed year-round. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, twenty minutes if you're just passing through from Minehead. The village itself is worth lingering in - there's a shop and it feels genuinely unspoilt, which gets rarer by the year.

If you're based at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club or Butlins, this makes a proper half-day detour rather than a tick-box stop. The walk up from the car park is steep enough to earn a decent view.
