Selsdon Wood Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself walking beneath a proper canopy of ancient woodland the moment you enter Selsdon Wood, just outside Warlingham. It's 60 hectares of mixed forest with paths that wind through beech, oak and sweet chestnut trees - the kind of place where you actually notice the light filtering through the leaves rather than just walking past it.

The reserve sits on the North Downs, so there's genuine elevation change rather than a flat amble. You get views across Surrey from the higher sections, and on a clear day it's well worth the climb. There are several marked trails ranging from gentle woodland strolls to proper walks if you fancy a bit of effort. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you'll spot wood pigeons, nuthatches and occasionally sparrowhawks if you're patient.

Families with older kids will appreciate it more than those with toddlers, mainly because the paths can be muddy and uneven depending on weather. A couple of hours covers the main loops comfortably, though you could easily stretch it to half a day if you're in no rush. Spring and autumn are absolute crackers for visiting - less crowded than summer and the woodland actually looks like something worth seeing.

It's free to wander, which keeps people coming back. The proximity to Milberry Green Meadows, just 2.8 miles away, makes this an easy add-on to a park holiday - you can knock this out on a morning walk before heading back for lunch. Far enough from the bustle to feel properly away, close enough that you're not spending half the day driving.
