A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured forest attraction, Seller Wood sits east of Colchester and delivers exactly what you'd want from an Essex woodland - ancient trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually lose the crowds. The main draw is the sense of stepping back into something old; these woods feel established, with mature oaks and a genuine network of trails that don't feel like they've been beaten to death by day-trippers.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's no visitor centre or café, no tidy picnic areas - you're just walking through proper forest. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse for entertainment unless they're already keen on spotting wildlife and investigating things. Binoculars would be worthwhile.

Access appears to be free, and you can easily spend an hour or two here depending on which routes you take. The woodland isn't vast, so it won't consume your entire day, but it's ideal for a morning or afternoon break if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Teybrook Orchard and Swallows Field Glamping Pods are both under four miles away. Colchester Country Park sits a touch further out if you want variety across a few days.

Go early on a weekday if you can. The woodland itself doesn't demand any particular season, though autumn when the leaves turn is when it actually feels like something special rather than just green space. Parking situation is a bit vague from what's available online, so check ahead.
