Secret Garden Playpark

The Secret Garden Playpark sits just outside Maldon and it's exactly what the name suggests - a sprawling nature reserve where you can actually let kids loose without worrying they'll destroy the place. It's got woodland trails threading through ancient trees, a proper play area with climbing frames and swings that don't look like they were installed in the 1980s, and enough open grass to burn off whatever energy your children arrive with.

Walking the trails takes anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on which routes you take. The woodland is genuine Essex countryside - nothing dramatic, but peaceful and genuinely green. You'll spot birds if you're quiet enough, and the paths are well-maintained without feeling overly manicured.

Kids between four and twelve will get the most out of this. Toddlers have the playground itself, older children can tackle the woodland walks. Adults appreciate the space to breathe - it's far less frantic than typical theme parks. Bring wellies even in dry weather; the paths can be boggy.
