Seated Figures

You'll round a corner at Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Barnsley and suddenly come face to face with a hundred cast iron figures, all seated, all facing the same direction. It's the work of Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz, and it's genuinely unsettling in the best way.

The sculptures are life-sized but headless - hollow shells of torsos hunched as if waiting for something. Some visitors find them melancholy, others see them as oddly peaceful. Either way, you don't forget them. They're scattered across the park's grounds, so you encounter them gradually rather than all at once, which shifts your perspective each time.

This is really for people who actually engage with art rather than just photograph it. Kids under twelve might find them creepy and lose interest quickly, though older teens often get it. History types and anyone interested in Eastern European contemporary work will spend a proper hour here. Walkers will appreciate that the wider park gives you reason to stay longer - it's not just a quick photo stop.

YSP is free to enter, though parking and specific exhibitions vary in cost. Allow at least ninety minutes if you're combining the sculptures with a wander around the rest of the grounds. Late afternoon light works best for photography.
