Seaside Wood

The woodland paths at Seaside Wood give you a proper sense of getting away from it all, even though you're only a short drive from Castle Douglas. It's the kind of place where you can wander for an hour or three without seeing another soul, which frankly is half the appeal. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dense with trees that block out most of the sky, and there's a genuine quiet that you don't often find these days.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you won't find a cafe or visitor centre - but rather a decent stretch of woodland to explore on foot. The paths are straightforward enough, though they can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth the bother. Allow a couple of hours if you want to actually see what's here rather than just cut through.

Families with young kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes before boredom sets in, unless your lot are genuinely keen on trees and the occasional bird. There's no facilities that I could establish, so bring water.

If you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby - Castle Point, Kippford View, or Sandyhills Bay are all within five miles - Seaside Wood makes for a decent morning out when the weather's decent. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Dumfries & Galloway in the first place. No fuss, no entrance fee that I'm aware of, just woodland and time.
