Seaside Fort

Roman soldiers once marched across this stretch of coast, and Seaside Fort - a genuine archaeological site near Castle Douglas - is where you can walk among the actual remains. It's not dramatic, to be frank. You won't find towering walls or reconstructed gatehouses. What you get instead is the honest rubble of a working Roman fortification, the kind of place that rewards patience and imagination more than it rewards casual passing trade.

The fort sits overlooking the Solway Firth, which is rather lovely on a clear day. Archaeology enthusiasts will spend a good hour picking through the layout, working out where the barracks stood, imagining the logistics of a garrison this far north. Families with young kids should manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in unless they're already keen on Roman history. Bring decent walking boots - the ground gets boggy.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards worth mentioning. That's either a plus or a minus depending on how you feel about unvarnished historical sites. Free access, far as I can tell, though it pays to check locally.

If you're camping nearby - Castle Point or Coastal Kippford are both close - this works well as a morning explore before heading to the quieter beaches around Kippford itself. Combine it with Castle Douglas town for lunch and you've got a solid half-day sorted. It won't blow your mind, but it won't waste your time either.
