Seagahan Reservoir

The water at Seagahan Reservoir sits unnervingly still on most days, a grey-blue mirror that stretches out from Markethill in ways the town itself doesn't prepare you for. You'd miss it entirely if you weren't looking - there's no grand entrance, no visitor centre with a café flogging overpriced sandwiches. Just a quiet water body that locals have known about for years.

It's proper walking country. The paths around the reservoir are straightforward, manageable even for families with younger legs, though nothing here screams "destination" in the way Lake District venues do. What you get instead is peace, and the occasional heron if you're lucky. Birdwatchers genuinely rate this spot - bring binoculars and patience in equal measure.

The main appeal is solitude. There's no queue, no Instagram filter needed, no sense you're part of some manufactured experience. In autumn the reflections are decent; in winter it can feel a bit desolate.
