Scrivan

Scrivan sits on the Isle of Arran as a proper hill walk rather than a serious mountain expedition. The peak itself isn't tremendously high, but the views across to the Kintyre Peninsula and over the Firth of Clyde make the effort worthwhile on a clear day.

The walk from Brodick or Lochranza takes a couple of hours up and down depending on your fitness. It's not technical - boots and a decent layer system will do the job - but the weather can turn quickly, so don't underestimate it. The path isn't always obvious in places, which adds a bit of navigation to the outing rather than just tramping along a tourist route.

Walkers will get the most from Scrivan. It's the sort of hill that rewards a bit of effort without demanding mountaineering skills or taking up your whole day. Families with older kids might manage it, but younger children could find it tedious - there's no proper destination like a café or dramatic summit feature to reward them at the top.

There's no charge to climb it, naturally. Allow three to four hours for the round trip if you're not rushing. Spring through autumn is best, though locals tackle it year-round.
