Scotch Gill Woods

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you enter Scotch Gill Woods - ancient trees, dappled light, and that particular smell of damp earth and pine that makes you remember why you came to Northumberland in the first place. It's a working forest, so don't expect twee paths and explanatory plaques; this is the real thing, with forest tracks that get genuinely muddy after rain and a sense that you're moving through something substantial rather than just taking a stroll.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. The terrain is varied enough to keep things interesting - there are proper climbs, forest hollows, and enough turns to stop it feeling repetitive. Kids aged eight-plus will enjoy it without complaint; younger ones might struggle with the uneven ground. You can spend anywhere from an hour to a full afternoon here depending on how far you venture.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather refreshing. It's free to access, and the nearest proper parking is back towards Morpeth. If you're staying at Tranwell Farm Holidays - just two miles away - this becomes an absolute no-brainer for a morning walk before heading to one of the bigger parks in the area. Hillside Huts & Cabins, five and a half miles out, also has decent access if you fancy something less manicured than your typical holiday park offering.

The real draw here is that it genuinely feels like you've left things behind, even though you're only a stone's throw from civilisation.
