Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve

Getting out to Scolt Head Island requires a bit of effort - there's no bridge, so you're either hiring a boat from Brancaster Staithe or walking across the saltmarsh when the tide allows. That friction is actually the point. This is a proper nature reserve, run by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and the whole experience hinges on the fact that you can't just roll up and nip round in twenty minutes.

The island itself is low-lying and windswept, ringed with shingle banks and backed by extensive saltmarsh. Terns breed here - common, Arctic, and sandwich - and in summer the noise and activity is genuinely brilliant. You'll see oystercatchers, ringed plovers, and if you're lucky, spoonbills. Winter brings different birds altogether: wigeon, pintail, and the occasional rarity that brings twitchers charging up from Norfolk's inland reserves.

This isn't a walk-round-and-done sort of place. Bring binoculars, a decent field guide, and time. Two to three hours minimum. The shingle can be tough underfoot, and the weather whips across with nothing to shield you - conditions can change fast, so check tides and forecasts before heading out.

It's perfect if you're staying at Deepdale Camping just 1.5 miles away, or The Norfolk Brickyard nearby. Those parks cater to people who actually want to explore rather than sit by a pool. Birdwatchers will have the time of their lives. Families with restless kids might find it a slog. Day-trippers from King's Lynn should allow a full afternoon minimum.
