Scargill Reservoir

The walk around Scargill Reservoir near Harrogate is straightforward and rather lovely, especially on a clear day when you can see right across the water to the moorland beyond. It's a proper working reservoir - you won't find fancy cafes or visitor centres, just a solid path that loops around the perimeter with decent views of the Yorkshire hills. The circuit takes about an hour depending on your pace, and the terrain is flat enough for families with pushchairs, though it can get muddy after rain. Birdwatchers do well here; I spotted several species of waterfowl during my visit, and in autumn the reflections off the water are genuinely striking.

This isn't a destination in itself - it's a decent diversion if you're already in the area. If you're staying at Windmill Retreats or Harrogate Caravan Park, both within easy reach, it makes a solid morning or early afternoon outing when the weather's reasonable. The nearest facilities are in Harrogate itself, so bring a packed lunch if you plan to linger. Kids will manage the walk fine, though they might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - the appeal is really for adults wanting a gentle leg-stretch rather than a day-long adventure. Free access, no entry fees that I could establish, and best visited between late spring and early autumn when the path is drier and the light is better.
