Scales Tarn

The walk up to Scales Tarn rewards you with one of the Lake District's most dramatic mountain backdrops. This small upland lake sits at around 2,500 feet on the eastern flank of Blencathra, near Keswick, and it's the kind of place that feels genuinely remote despite being accessible from a proper carpark.

The approach isn't a casual stroll. Most people tackle it from Threlkeld, working their way up the steep fell path in around 90 minutes. The gradient is relentless in places, particularly as you climb through the scree and moorland, but the payoff is substantial. The tarn itself is moody and beautiful in equal measure - dark water reflecting granite cliffs, with Blencathra looming above. In late afternoon light it's genuinely atmospheric.

This is squarely a walk for people who don't mind effort. Families with young children will struggle unless they're keen hill walkers. The path is rough, ankle-turning in places, and there's genuine exposure on some sections. Strong walkers doing a circuit linking Blencathra will pass through here, and that's probably the best use of the tarn - fold it into a longer day rather than treating it as a destination in isolation.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon gives you solitude. Midday on a summer weekend brings crowds with the view, which slightly diminishes the experience. Free, obviously - it's fell walking. Allow three to four hours if you're going up and coming back the same way.

Staying at Troutbeck Head or Carrock Glamping makes this a proper day's adventure. It's not a gentle Lake District experience - it demands respect and proper kit.
