Saxon Gate Nature Reserve

The reserve sits just outside Bury Saint Edmunds, a proper slice of Suffolk wetland that doesn't get nearly as much footfall as it deserves. You're walking through fen and carr woodland here - the kind of squelchy, wild terrain that feels a million miles from the tourist trail even though you're minutes from town.

It's genuinely excellent for bird watchers. Marsh harriers, bitterns if you're lucky, and in winter the place comes alive with visiting waders and wildfowl. The paths wind through reed beds and past open water, and there's something quite meditative about the stillness of it all. Not dramatic in the conventional sense - no views that make you gasp - but the kind of landscape that grows on you the longer you spend time there.

Walkers will find a couple of hours easily absorbed here. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited on entertainment, to be honest - it's not the sort of place you can dash around, and if your lot need a playground afterwards, you're better looking elsewhere. But if you've got keen naturalists in tow, especially anyone interested in insects or birds, they'll be transfixed.

Stay at The Four Bells or Bright Meadow if you're basing yourselves locally. The reserve works nicely as a morning visit before exploring Bury Saint Edmunds proper, or as a quiet counterpoint to busier attractions. Go early if you can - that's when you'll actually see wildlife rather than just hear it rustling away from you.
