Savages Wood

The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter and the kind of quiet you don't get in many places anymore. Savages Wood, just outside Wotton-under-Edge, is proper woodland - the sort where you actually feel like you're walking through something wild rather than a managed nature trail with colour-coded signs. The trees create a dense canopy that keeps things cool even on warmer days, and there's a real sense of stepping away from everything.

It's genuinely good for walkers who want something peaceful without needing to drive hours to reach it. The paths meander through, and while it's not particularly dramatic, there's something restorative about it. Kids will enjoy it if they're the sort who like exploring and spotting wildlife rather than needing something obviously entertaining - expect tree climbing, not playgrounds.

Families based at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping just up the road could easily pop here for an hour's walk, which is probably the sweet spot. Longer than that and you're just circling. The forest doesn't demand much time but delivers decent value for a free woodland wander.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of that I could find, so come prepared - waterproofs if there's been rain, because it does get boggy in places. Wotton-under-Edge itself is worth a look afterwards, an actual market town with proper character rather than the usual High Street clones. Pair this with a walk and a pub lunch and you've got a solid half-day sorted.
