Sandyhills caravan site

Sandyhills is a working caravan site just outside Dalbeattie, right on the Solway Firth coast. It's not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense - you're looking at a functional seaside caravan park with direct beach access, rather than somewhere you'd pop in for an afternoon visit. That said, if you're staying in the area or based at one of the surrounding parks like Castle Point or Kippford, the beach here is worth knowing about.

The draw is straightforward: a decent stretch of sand, rockpools when the tide's out, and views across to the English coast. It's got that quiet, slightly forgotten quality that characterises much of the Dumfries and Galloway coast. Dog walkers seem to love it, and families with younger kids will find enough to occupy them for a couple of hours poking about in the shallows.

The caravan site itself is private, so access to the beach may depend on whether you're staying there or have arrangement with the site. Worth ringing ahead to check. Dalbeattie, the nearest proper town, is just a few miles inland and has the basics if you need supplies. The wider area - Kippford with its working harbour is particularly good - makes this part of the coast worth a longer visit rather than a quick stop. If you're doing a touring holiday around Dumfries and Galloway, Sandyhills works as a genuine break from driving rather than a scheduled sight-seeing stop.
